It can be classified into three aspects: surface treatment, shape, and material, and there are the following types respectively.

 

1. Surface Treatment

According to the different surface treatment methods, there are:

1). Annealed steel tying wire

Black annealing treatment to provide a bright surface. Also, the annealed wire has good elasticity and flexibility. In order to prevent rust, you can apply anti-rust oil on the surface to maintain its service life.
2). Electro galvanized binding wire

Through electro-galvanizing, its surface is covered by a thin zinc layer, which makes it more corrosion resistant to prolongs its service life.
3). Hot-dip galvanized tie wire

It refers to coating steel wire with zinc by immersing the metal in a bath of molten zinc at a temperature of around 450 °C. The zinc coating thickness can reach up to 300 g/m2. So it provides better corrosion resistance than electro-galvanizing.
4). PVC or PE coated binding wire

This product uses galvanized wire as raw material and then applies a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) coating on the surface. The PVC coating makes the steel wire resistant to dirt, oil, salt, chemicals, UV rays, etc. so that its service life is up to 12 years. 2. Different Materials

Besides, according to the different materials, it includes mild steel (MS) binding wire and stainless steel (SS) binding wire, etc.

1). MS binding wire uses low-carbon steel as a material. The plain steel wire is black. It is used to tie applications in construction uses, such as for tying the rebars.

To prolong its service life, it can be galvanized or PVC-coated. After galvanizing, it has a silver and smooth surface finish. Also, it has better corrosion resistance.

2. U Type wire

Ⅴ. How much binding wire is required for 1000 kg steel?

The amount of tying wire needed to tie 1000kg or 1 ton of rebar is as follows:
8mm – 12 kg – 13.5 kg
10-12mm – 10 kg
16-25mm – 8 kg
28-32mm – 7 kg
32-40mm – 4 kg

On the left is the diameter of the reinforcement in millimeters, and on the right is the number of tied wires, which depends on the size of the reinforcement and the complexity of the steel design.

    Chinese Codes & Grades

    Reinforcement bar grade in China is subject to the requirements of Chinese Standards GB1499.2-2018. According to the production process, we have hot-rolled steel bar (H) and cold rolled steel bar (C). The hot rolled steel bar is divided into plain round bar (HPB300) and ribbed bar.

    The common grades of hot rolled ribbed bars are HRB400, HRBF400, HRB400E, HRBF400E, HRB500, HRBF500, HRB500E, and HRB600.

    Here “H” stands for hot-rolled, “R” is for ribbed steel bar, “P” is for plain round bar, and “B” is short for bars. Besides, “F” means fine grains; while “E” stands for seismic (Earthquake) ductility. The number stands for the minimum yield strength.

    For example, HRB400 is hot-rolled ribbed steel bars, and its standard yield strength is 400MPa. Below are the grades.

     

    Rebar Grades

    HPB300 (Grade Ⅰ) is plain steel rebar, with a diameter of 6-12 mm. It is often used to make stirrups, wall reinforcement, and so on.
    HRB335 (Grade Ⅱ) is deformed steel bar, with a diameter of 12-25 mm. It is commonly used for beams, columns, and shear walls in large and medium-sized concrete structures, such as bridges, dams, houses, etc.
    HRB400 (Grade Ⅲ) is similar to HRB 335, but it is of higher strength and higher price. It is often used in special buildings, such as villas.
    HRB500 (Grade IV) is 12 mm in diameter, and it is widely used in large-scale pre-stressed construction, such as roof, crane beam, etc.

    Differences Between Welded And Woven Wire Mesh

    1. Different Making Methods

    One of the primary differences between woven and welded wire mesh is how they are constructed. Welded mesh is created by spot welding parallel longitudinal wires with cross wires together at the required spacing. While woven wire mesh is formed by weaving wires together, under and over one another. Generally, weaving process is almost fully automatic.

    2. Different Features

    As the intersection of welded wire mesh is welded and its opening size is permanent, it provides higher rigidity and strength. Its solid structure and fixed opening shape makes it not easy to deform under force. While the intersection of the woven wire mesh is not fixed so that it is pliable. Also, its wire diameter, opening size, weave pattern, width, and length can be customized according to your needs. To conclude, the welded mesh is more durable and stronger than the woven mesh. But the woven mesh is more flexible than those of welded mesh. And the flexibility of woven mesh also provides unique durability under press.

    3. Different Opening Sizes

    Generally, woven mesh is available with smaller opening sizes. But weaving is not suitble for large opening sizes. It is because it is hard to keep the shape for woven mesh in large opening sizes. By comparison, welded is better suited for larger openings (larger than 1/4″) because it is difficult to weld for fine opening sizes. As we know, in order to leave enough opening for welding, the mesh with smaller openings will use thinner wires. But the thin wires are easy to be melt during welding process. So if you need a larger opening size mesh, welded mesh will be a better choice.

    4.Different Applications

    Considering that welded wire mesh is more durable and stronger, it is preferable for security fencing, animal cages, and concrete wire mesh, etc. Due to the fine opening size, woven mesh is widely used in filtration products, insect screens, etc. More than that, its flexibility also allows it yield under outside pressure and then spring back. So it is also an ideal choice for livestock fencing or sport fields fencing, etc.

    Compared with the woven wire mesh, the welded wire mesh is more expensive. As mentioned, the weaving process of woven wire mesh is mostly automated. Welded wire mesh, however, requires more labor costs. That’s why the welded wire mesh is more costly.

    Advantages and characteristics of galvanized wire

    1. Excellent anti-corrosion performance: The outermost galvanized layer effectively isolates the steel wire matrix from external oxygen, moisture, salt spray, etc., extending the service life.
    2. Strong weather resistance: It can maintain stable performance under harsh conditions such as ocean and industrial pollution after long-term exposure to wind and sun.

    3. High strength and toughness: The tensile strength and high ductility of 500-1500 MPa can meet various usage requirements such as bundling, weaving, tensioning, etc.

    4. Processing adaptability: The thickness of the zinc layer is controllable, and the flexibility and wear resistance can be adjusted according to the application scenario. For example, cold-drawn galvanized wire is softer, and hot-dip galvanized wire is more wear-resistant.
    5. Weldability: It can be galvanized and welded to form electric welded mesh for garden mesh rolls or building materials.

    How Is Galvanized Steel Wire Made?

    The GI wire manufacturing process is very simple. Here it is.

    Wire Rods – Pickling (annealing – rust removing – acid washing) – Wire Drawing Process – Galvanizing Process – Stranding.

     

    1. The first step is the pickling process, including annealing, rust removal, and acid washing,  which aims to remove the impurities on the surface of wire rods.

    2. Then it will go through the drawing machine, and steel wires will be formed into the desired size.

    3. Then the wire will be galvanized by dipping into a zinc solution or electroplating.

    4. This is the main difference between hot-dipped galvanized and electro-galvanized wires.

    5. After galvanizing, the GI wires will be rolled into coils for sale.

    What Is Galvanized Wire Used For?

    Uses of various forms of galvanized wire

    1. Cold-dip galvanized wire: hardware, small parts such as nails, screws, bolts and nuts, internal structural parts of electronic products, handicrafts, and decorations.
    2. Hot-dip galvanized wire: building binding, concrete reinforcement fixing, making fences, fences, farm isolation nets, grape racks, vegetable support wires, and communication cable reinforcement cores.
    3. Ordinary zinc-layer galvanized wire: general bundling, packaging, carton, hay packing, simple protective nets, chicken cage weaving. Temporary fixation in low-corrosion environment.

    Does Galvanized Wire Rust?

    The answer is yes, but very slow. Any piece of steel product will oxidize and rust after exposure to rain or moisture. Rust damages the product itself and reduces its service life. However, after galvanizing, the zinc coating will enhance its corrosion resistance, which will protect it from rust. So GI wiring will rust very slowly, especially hot-dipped galvanized steel wires.

    How is galvanized wire packaged?

    There are generally four packaging methods:
    1. Galvanized spool wire: Use reel packaging, which is suitable for wires with small wire diameters and no need for support.
    2. Small roll packaging: also called beauty packaging, 1-2kg per roll, can be tied to the body when used, very portable.
    3. Roll packaging: the most common packaging, lined with plastic film, woven bag, or lined with plastic film, or linen outside. This packaging can protect the binding wire from rusting, and is a good packaging to save packaging costs.
    4. Large roll packaging: generally 500kg/roll, roll weight can be customized; this type of packaging is generally for customers to produce wire mesh.
