Common grades

1) HPB300: Plain round steel bar, good ductility (elongation ≥ 25%), easy to bend, used for ordinary concrete structures.
2) HRB400: Most commonly used ribbed steel bar, with balanced strength and ductility (elongation ≥ 16%), suitable for high-rise buildings and bridges.
3) HRB400E: Earthquake-resistant type (E stands for earthquake-resistant), low yield strength ratio, used for structures in earthquake-prone areas.
4) HRB500: High-strength steel bar, saves steel consumption, but has slightly poor weldability and needs to control carbon equivalent (CEV ≤ 0.54%).
5) HRB600: Ultra-high strength, used for special projects (such as long-span bridges), requires strict process control.

Note: China standards use HRB400 as the mainstream, and the E suffix is earthquake-resistant steel bar. HRB600 is less used due to its high cost, but it is in line with the trend of green building reduction.

Deformed bar features

Ribbed steel bars have the following significant advantages.

1. High bonding strength: The surface crescent pattern, equal height ribs, and other deformation designs can be effectively embedded in concrete to form mechanical anchoring, which is more than 30% higher than the bonding strength of smooth steel bars and enhances the integrity of the structure.

2. High yield strength: The yield strength of HRB400 grade threaded steel bars reaches 400MPa, and HRB500 grade reaches 500MPa, which can withstand greater loads.

3. High tensile strength: It can disperse stress more effectively when subjected to tension, thereby increasing tensile strength. Good ductility and excellent seismic performance.

4. Galvanized treatment: The hot-dip galvanized layer protects the steel bars from corrosion and extends the service life to more than 50 years.

5. Easy to process: It can be bent and welded, cold-bent 180° without cracks, and is suitable for complex node construction.

6. Economic benefits: Works with concrete to reduce the amount of steel bars by 10%-15%.

7. Low maintenance cost: Long-term use does not require frequent replacement, and the cost of the entire life cycle is reduced by more than 20%. The shape and size design make it easier to hold and position during construction, helping to improve construction efficiency.

Deformed bar classification

Deformed steel bars can be divided into many types according to their shapes, sizes, and uses. For example, hot-rolled ribbed steel bars HRB335 and HRB400 are common types of deformed steel bars, which have different yield strengths and tensile strengths and are suitable for different engineering needs.

What is the difference between prestressed steel bars and deformed bars?

Prestressing steel bars

1. Definition: Prestressed steel bars are steel bars that have been prestressed. During the production process, pre-tensioning or post-tensioning methods are used to apply prestress to the steel bars to generate a certain tensile stress inside them. This treatment method can significantly improve the tensile strength and fatigue resistance of steel bars.

2. Identification method: Prestressed steel bars are mainly used in concrete structures that need to withstand large tension and pressure. These structures often have high requirements on the strength and stability of the material. Its surface has many ring-shaped skeletons and raised fine particles, which are signs of prestressing. And there are usually blue colored lines and logos engraved with letters and numbers on the surface to distinguish its variety, strength, material, and other information.

3. Bending test: After bending the steel bar to a certain angle and releasing it, the prestressed steel bar will immediately stretch outward instead of rebounding to its original shape.

Deformed bars

1. Definition: The surface of the deformed steel bar has ribs, threads or other shapes of deformation. This deformation is formed during the steel bar production process through processes such as hot rolling or cold rolling. Deformed steel bars usually have identification information such as model and specification.

2. The main feature: it has a strong bond with concrete and can be used as prestressed steel bars after cold drawing.

In summary, prestressed steel bars are commonly used in bridge construction and large-scale factory building construction. Deformed steel bars are commonly used in structures such as house structures, road and bridge steel mesh, and steel cages. Therefore, deformed steel bars are more common in various reinforced concrete structures, and prestressed steel bars are more common in large-span bridges.

Is a deformed bar the same as a rebar?

Rebars refer to reinforcing steel bars, including deformed bars or debars, concrete reinforcement bars, or, in the Filipino term kabilya, which are round steel bars with protrusions called deformations used as tension devices in reinforced concrete to strengthen and hold the concrete together. The deformed steel bars specifically refer to steel bars with ribs and threads on the surface. They are containment relationships.

What are hot rolled steel bars and cold rolled steel bars?

The main difference between the two is the processing method. The following is a detailed explanation:

Hot rolled steel bars

1. Definition: Hot-rolled steel bars are finished steel bars that are hot-rolled and naturally cooled. They are made of low-carbon steel and ordinary alloy steel pressed at high temperatures. The production process includes heating, hot rolling, cooling, etc.

2. Features: Hot-rolled steel bars are soft steel, and necking occurs when they break, with a large elongation. The diameter range is wide, generally 6.540 mm in diameter, of which the 6.59 mm diameter steel bars are mostly rolled into wire rods.

Cold rolled steel bars

1. Definition: Cold-rolled steel bars are steel bars obtained by cold processing hot-rolled steel bars. Usually, the steel bars are cold-drawn, drawn, or cold-rolled at room temperature. The production process includes cold drawing, cold drawing, or cold rolling. The steel bars are plastically deformed by machinery. The cold rolling process can further increase the yield point and strength of the steel bars.

2. Features: The bonding strength with concrete is high. Due to the appearance of crescent-shaped cross ribs, it has better bonding performance and anti-slip performance.
