What is steel reinforcement mesh?

It is a strong mesh plate made of ribbed steel bars or round steel bars welded at fixed intervals. It is used on the surface or inside of concrete structures (such as walls, floor slabs, beams, columns, etc.) and is firmly combined with concrete to resist external loads and internal stresses, thereby improving the overall bearing capacity and durability of the concrete structure.

Features

  • High strength and durability: It can withstand large tension and pressure, significantly improving the bearing capacity of concrete structures. Galvanized steel mesh can effectively resist corrosion. Extend life.
  • High construction efficiency: It is a prefabricated product with a standardized size and can be laid directly, reducing the time and labor cost of on-site steel bar binding. Suitable for large-scale projects
  • Good structural stability: The criss-cross welded structure enables it to effectively disperse the load and reduce the risk of concrete cracking. The uniform grid ensures the bond with the concrete and improves the overall shear and bending resistance.
  • Cost-effective: It can reduce the amount of binding wire and other steel materials, shorten the construction time, and its durability and maintenance cost are relatively low, and the overall comprehensive cost is relatively cheap.
  • Strong adaptability: Different specifications can be customized according to project requirements, such as mesh size, steel bar diameter, material, etc., suitable for a variety of concrete structures and various environments.
  • High safety: The welded mesh plate has a firm structure and is not easy to loosen, reducing safety hazards during construction. The earthquake and wind resistance are increased.
  • Flexibility: It can be used in combination with prestressed tendons and fiber-reinforced materials, and is suitable for various shapes and sizes such as curved surfaces and special-shaped components.

What is steel reinforcement mesh used for?

1. Recommended types for different purposes

You may not know how to choose the right steel mesh. The following are suggestions:

  • Light structures (walls, floor heating): A98 / Q92 / R92.
  • Ordinary floors, foundations: A142 / Q131.
  • Industrial floors, bridges: A193 / A252 / Q188.
  • Heavy structures (airports, docks): A393 / B785.
  • Special reinforcement (insulation layer, anti-cracking): R92 / Q92.

2. Application Areas

  • Floor and ground reinforcement: In the pouring of concrete for industrial, civil, and shopping mall floors or ground, soft soil foundations or foundation projects that need to enhance bearing capacity, the combination of steel mesh and concrete can disperse the load and improve the ability to resist settlement.
  • Wall reinforcement: In brick walls or concrete walls, steel mesh can enhance the shear resistance and seismic resistance of the wall, especially in high-rise buildings or earthquake-prone areas.

  • Road and pavement paving: In concrete pavements such as roads, airport runways or parking lots, steel mesh is used to prevent the pavement from cracking due to heavy loads or temperature changes.
  • Tunnels and underground projects: In projects such as tunnel linings, underground pipelines or basements, welded steel mesh can enhance the stability of concrete structures and prevent damage caused by soil or water pressure.
  • Bridge reinforcement: In the deck, piers, or beams of bridges, steel mesh is used to improve the tensile strength and durability of the structure to ensure long-term safety.
  • Precast components: In the production of precast concrete slabs, wall panels or beams, steel mesh can be used as a skeleton to ensure the integrity of the components during transportation and installation.
  • Protective engineering: In protective engineering, such as retaining walls, slope protection, or flood dikes, the laying of steel mesh can enhance the impact resistance of the structure and prevent soil landslides.
  • Swimming pools and pools: In the construction of concrete swimming pools or pools, steel mesh is used to prevent structural cracking caused by water pressure or temperature changes.

Faqs

Can I use mesh instead of steel reinforcing rebar?

It depends on the use. In some cases, wire mesh can be used as a substitute for steel bars. However, the mesh size and wire diameter of wire mesh are usually smaller, and its load-bearing capacity and strength may not be as good as traditional steel bars. Therefore, wire mesh may not be able to completely replace steel bars in applications that require heavy loads or have high structural requirements.

Which is cheaper, rebar or wire mesh?

The same amount of welded mesh is cheaper than steel bars. Generally speaking, the price of steel bars with larger diameter and higher quality will be relatively higher, while the price of wire mesh is related to its mesh size, wire diameter, and material (such as stainless steel, galvanized, etc.). In addition, manufacturers will give more favorable prices for bulk purchases. So, the purchase quantity will affect the unit price.

Does steel mesh stop concrete from cracking?

It will have this effect, but generally, steel mesh and steel bars are matched. The Steel Reinforcement Bar forms an internal skeleton within the component, and the mesh and concrete are integrated to strengthen it. In this way, the steel bars and steel mesh work together to resist cracking and significantly improve overall tensile strength.

Why put steel mesh in concrete?

With concrete, there is nothing we can do to prevent it from cracking, but when cracks do appear, wire mesh can hold the material together. In addition, it helps to distribute the weight of the load, which is especially important if your building is not up to standard.

How thick is reinforcing mesh?

There is no specific number for this. Generally, the wire diameter of the mesh can be roughly measured by its wire diameter (i.e., the diameter of the steel wire that makes up the mesh). It usually ranges from a few millimeters to tens of millimeters.

For example, some products may have steel wires with different wire diameters, such as 5mm, 6mm, 7mm, or 8mm, and the mesh size may be 100x300mm, 200x200mm, etc.

Is steel mesh as good as rebar mesh?

It is not possible to simply say whether mesh (welded wire mesh) is as good as rebar. The choice between the two depends on the specific project requirements, cost budget, and construction conditions.

Welded wire mesh can provide a more uniform stress distribution. In some cases, the mesh may be an economical and effective choice; in other cases, a higher-strength rebar may be required to ensure the safety and stability of the structure.

Name Rebar Mesh
Definition Rebar is a material widely used in the construction industry In the field of construction, mesh usually refers to welded wire mesh, which is also a material used for concrete reinforcement
Performance High strength, toughness, and weldability, effectively dispersing the tensile stress in concrete and improving the overall stability and durability of the structure Easy to install, fast construction speed, relatively low cost, and can effectively enhance the tensile properties of concrete, but may not be as stable as steel bars under certain extreme stress conditions
Application Large, heavy, complex structural construction projects, such as high-rise buildings, bridges, tunnels, etc. Suitable for occasions where cost is controlled and structural strength requirements are not particularly high, such as concrete reinforcement of walls, floors, etc.
