Common Stainless Steel Grades

304 Stainless Steel

304 stainless steel is one of the most commonly used grades in the production of welded mesh and is a food grade stainless steel. It contains about 18% chromium and 8% nickel, maintaining good corrosion resistance in any environment. It is a cost-effective choice for applications with moderate corrosion resistance. This steel grade is often used in food and beverage processing, window screens, balcony railings and decorative elements in the construction industry.

316 Stainless Steel

316 stainless steel is a marine grade stainless steel that is more corrosion resistant than 304 stainless steel. The presence of 2-3% molybdenum makes it more resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in chloride-rich environments. Due to its strong resistance to seawater corrosion, it is widely used in ships, chemical processing plants, pharmaceutical plants and other industries exposed to corrosive chemicals.

Other grades

For example, grades 304L, 316L, 201, and 430. 304L and 316L are lower carbon versions of 304 and 316, respectively, with higher resistance to intergranular corrosion. 201 SS steel is more affordable and has a lower nickel content, but its corrosion resistance is relatively poor compared to 304 and 316. 430 SS steel is a ferritic stainless steel that is often used in applications that require high heat resistance and formability while also requiring some corrosion resistance.

Types of Stainless Welded Wire Mesh

Classification by mesh shape

  • Square stainless steel welded mesh: the warp and weft wires are welded vertically, the holes are square or rectangular, and the structure is balanced. The force is uniform, which is the most common type.
  • Rectangular stainless steel welded mesh: the mesh is rectangular, which is convenient for ventilation or filtration in a specific direction, and the hole length and hole width ratio can be customized.
  • Diamond hole stainless steel welded mesh: oblique weaving, strong impact resistance, good elasticity, often used in the field of protection.

Manufacturing Process

Raw material Preparation

Select the appropriate grade of stainless steel rod. It is drawn to the required diameter and cut to the required length.

Welding Process

There are many welding methods, the most common of which is resistance welding. During resistance welding, an electric current is passed through the intersections of metal wires. The heat generated by the resistance of the wires to the current causes the metals to melt and fuse together, forming a strong weld. The welding process is highly automated, ensuring accurate dimensions and consistent quality.

Post-Welding Processing

This includes cutting the mesh into the required sheet size or roll, trimming the edges to make them smooth, and performing quality inspections. Some applications may require further processing of the mesh, such as polishing or applying a protective coating.
