Characteristics of 316L stainless steel
- Excellent corrosion resistance: Good corrosion resistance in both oxidizing and reducing media, especially resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking.
- Good processing performance: Easy to perform hot and cold processing and excellent weldability. The high temperature resistance limit is 1575℃ and the minimum is 800℃.
- Excellent low temperature performance: Low-temperature resistance, the lowest can reach minus 196℃, and it can still maintain good toughness and plasticity in low temperature environments.
- Non-magnetic: Suitable for applications sensitive to magnetism.
- Good biocompatibility: Widely used in medical devices and human implants.

Is 316L the same as 316 stainless steel?
The two are different. Although the names are similar, they are different in performance and purpose.
1. Performance
- Carbon content: 316 carbon content ≤0.08%, 316L: carbon content ≤0.03% (low carbon),
- Corrosion resistance: 316L is better than 316, especially after welding.
- Weldability: 316L is better than 316, no annealing is required after welding.
- Strength: 316 is higher than 316L because its carbon content is slightly higher.
2. Uses
In contrast, 316 stainless steel is suitable for general corrosion, and 316L stainless steel is suitable for more severe corrosion environments, especially where welding is required.
