Steel Rebar Size, Grades & Codes
Rebar (reinforcing bar) is available in different grades and specifications. And the grade designation varies by country. What are the commonly used rebar sizes? For example, some characters often appear in engineering drawings: 4 rebar, 6 rebar, 1 2 rebar, 7 rebar, 3 8 rebar, 3 rebar, 3 4 rebar, 5 8 rebar, 1 4 rebar, 10mm rebar, 6mm rebar, 1 2 inch rebar, 12mm rebar, etc. In fact, these numbers represent different steel bar grades and correspond to different diameters. Besides, the use of a grade indicates the minimum yield strength. For more detailed data, please refer to the following table.

Chinese Codes & Grades
Reinforcement bar grade in China is subject to the requirements of Chinese Standards GB1499.2-2018. According to the production process, we have hot-rolled steel bar (H) and cold rolled steel bar (C). The hot rolled steel bar is divided into plain round bar (HPB300) and ribbed bar. The common grades of hot rolled ribbed bars are HRB400, HRBF400, HRB400E, HRBF400E, HRB500, HRBF500, HRB500E, HRB600. Here “H” stands for hot-rolled, “R” is for ribbed steel bar, “P” is for plain round bar, and “B” is short for bars. Besides, “F” means fine grains; while “E” stands for seismic (Earthquake) ductility. The number stands for the minimum yield strength. For example, HRB400 is hot-rolled ribbed steel bars, and its standard yield strength is 400MPa. Below are the grades.
HPB300 (Grade Ⅰ) is plain steel rebar, with a diameter of 6-12 mm. It is often used to make stirrups, wall reinforcement, and so on.
HRB335 (Grade Ⅱ) is deformed steel bar, with a diameter of 12-25 mm. It is commonly used for beams, columns, shear walls in large and medium-sized concrete structures, such as bridges, dams, houses, etc.
HRB400 (Grade Ⅲ) is similar to HRB 335, but it is of higher strength and higher price. It is often used in special buildings, such as villas.
HRB500 (Grade IV) is 12 mm in diameter, and it is widely used in large-scale pre-stressed construction, such as roof, crane beam, etc.
Chinese Rebar Codes | Yield Strength (Mpa) | Tensile Strength (Mpa) | Carbon Content |
HRB400, HRBF400, HRB400E, HRBF400E | 400 | 540 | ≤0.25 |
HRB500, HRBF500, HRB500E, HRBF500E | 500 | 630 | ≤0.25 |
HRB600 | 600 | 730 | ≤0.28 |
US Sizes & Grades
In US use, the steel rebar grade shows the minimum yield strength in ksi (1000 psi). For example, Grade 40 rebar has a minimum yield strength of 40 ksi, which is equal to 300 Mpa. The most common grades are Grade 40, 60, and 75. Under ASTM A615, Grade 40 is only in sizes #3 to #6. And Grade 60 is the most popular rebar grade in US construction. Below is a table showing the common grades.
Grade | Tensile Strength (Mpa (psi)) | Yield Strength (Mpa (psi)) |
40 | 500 (70000) | 300 (40000) |
60 | 620 (90000) | 420 (60000) |
75 | 690 (100000) | 520 (75000) |

How to Choose A Suitable Rebar Size?
If you want reinforcing bar price, you need to confirm some basic information: material, grade, diameter, quantity, and your special requirements. Of course, you can also inform us of the rebar codes you required.
1. You can find different types of reinforcement bars on the market. According to the material, there are carbon steel reinforcement bars (black steel rebar); galvanized steel rebars; stainless steel reinforcement bars; epoxy-coated rebars.
2. Please confirm the grade, which indicates the minimum yield strength. Also, it is very crucial to determine the diameter.
3. How many pieces or tons do you need for your projects? Generally, the order quantity will directly influence the price. The bulk buy price will be lower.
4. If you have special requirements, such as packaging, zinc coating thickness, seismic standards, etc., please let us know. These details will help us to provide you with the latest price as soon as possible. However, if you are still confused, please talk with us about the use purposes and use environment. We will offer a suitable solution to you.
Different types of reinforcing bar
As mentioned above. The type of rebar is one of the factors we need to consider when choosing rebar. In addition to the materials mentioned above, there are also these: low carbon rebar, composite rebar, carbon fiber rebar, plastic rebar, which are classified by material. In addition, they can also be classified by grade, such as grade I, grade II, grade III, and grade IV. Have you ever seen ribbed rebars and round bar rebars with smooth surfaces? These are rebars with different processing methods. In addition, there are coiled rebars supplied in the form of discs, and rebars bundled in long strips, etc.
