What is diamond lath used for?

It is widely used in plasterwork as plaster reinforcement on interior masonry walls and for fireproofing steel columns. It is also widely used as reinforcement for primers in tile work. Self-Furring Dimpled Diamond Mesh Lath is used over solid surfaces like concrete, cement board, column fireproofing, masonry, and replastering over old surfaces. The self-furring dimples hold the metal lath 1/4″ away from the surface to be plastered. The dimpled raised lath substrate provides a superior mechanical bond over solid surfaces. Wanzhi Steel’s wire lath adopts hot-dip galvanized surface treatment for excellent performance.

Applications include ceiling, soffit, and fascia surfaces, and under tile in wall, ceiling, and floor applications. What is lath mesh?

Expanded metal lath is formed from sheet steel that has been slit and expanded to form hundreds of “keys” per square yard. It is proven over time to possess exceptional strength and flexibility, making it the preferred metal base requested by contractors and design professionals.

What is diamond mesh?

Diamond mesh is woven on a special weaving machine. This machine weaves the mesh in a diamond orientation, rather than the standard square orientation. In addition to being able to produce this diamond orientation, these machines can also weave metal steel mesh in extremely wide widths.

When less corrosion resistance is required, G90 coated or standard G60 galvanized steel metal lath can be used. Where the highest level of corrosion resistance is required, a stainless steel substrate with Portland cement or gypsum plaster (for stucco and stone reinforcement) must be used for both interior and exterior installations.

3.4 means it weighs about 3.4 pounds, about 1.54 kilograms per square yard. The corresponding mesh strip size is 24 inches x 96 inches. 3.4 pounds per square yard is the necessary weight in-ceiling applications.

What is the difference between 2.5 and 3.4 Diamond mesh lath？

Stucco diamond mesh comes in 2 regular weights: 2.5 and 3.4, meaning the stucco weighs 2.5 pounds per square yard or 3.4 pounds per square yard. The 2.5 is good for side walls, and 3.4 is required for ceilings and roofs to prevent sagging. In government work, 3.4 is required for both walls and ceilings.

Diamond Mesh Lath Shape Classification

1. Self furring diamond mesh lath

Used extensively in exterior stucco and stone work over sheathing and as a plaster base over masonry walls. Self-furring dimples or embossed “V” grooves hold the latha  minimum 1⁄4” away from solid surfaces to aid in the keying of stucco to the lath. Wanzhi Steel’s self-furred lath does not require additional self-furring mechanisms to function as required by ASTM C1063.

2. Flat Lath

Slatted mesh is made of high quality steel sheet, which is machine cut and expanded to form small diamond shaped openings. This large number of openings provides more plaster keys, providing better scratch coat bonding in either pumped or troweled applications.

Each sheet has square ends and smooth parallel edges on the sides for fast, easy handling and bending for curved surfaces. G60 galvanized finish to ASTM A653 and ASTM C847.

Take the size of Wanzhi Steel as an example: Dimple spacing 5-1⁄4” in length with offset rows 5-1⁄4” apart in width.

4. V-Grooved Lath

According to the ASTM C1063 version, metal lath applied to solid substrates must have 1⁄4” self-furring properties, built into the lath sheet.

Therefore, Wanzhi Steel recommends the use of self-furred (SF) lath over solid substrates, as required by current codes. Self-furring lath is not required over framing members less than 1-5/8” wide or over open framing.

Diamond Mesh Lath Installation Tips

In construction applications, to avoid cracks in the wall later, the diamond metal lath should be overlapped by at least 1 inch. The diamond-shaped mesh with pits allows the lath to be moved away from the wall, allowing good penetration of the mortar and making the project stronger.
