Stainless Steel Threaded Rod
Stainless steel threaded rod (also called a “stud” or “all-thread rod”) is a long metal rod with threads throughout its entire length, allowing nuts or other threaded components to be installed at any point. Its corrosion resistance, strength, and durability in harsh environments make it suitable for applications in construction, machinery manufacturing, the chemical industry, water treatment, and marine engineering. Common grades include 304 and 316. Wanzhi Steel manufactures threaded rod in various grades, diameters, and lengths, with custom sizes available. If you are interested, please get in touch with us.

304 316 Stainless Steel Threaded Rod
- Low-Temperature Toughness: Austenitic stainless steels (304L and 316L) maintain excellent impact properties at low temperatures and lack a ductile-brittle transition temperature, making them suitable for low-temperature applications such as polar engineering.
- Fatigue Resistance: The densely distributed threads ensure uniform stress distribution, making them suitable for environments with frequent vibration or cyclic stress, such as those found in aerospace hydraulic systems.
- Aesthetics and Cleanability: The smooth, easy-to-maintain surface, coupled with a metallic luster, meets aesthetically pleasing requirements in architectural decoration, household goods, and other applications.
- Hygienic Performance: Upgraded materials prevent chromium plating from fading, meeting hygiene standards in food and medical applications.
Weight calculation formula
Theoretical weight formula
Weight (kg) = [π × threaded rod diameter (m)² × threaded rod length (m) × stainless steel density] / 4
- Density of 304 stainless steel: approximately 7930 kg/m³.
- Density of 316L stainless steel: approximately 7980 kg/m³.
- General approximate value: 7850 kg/m³ (applicable to ordinary steel; fine adjustments may be made for stainless steel).
Simplified formula
Weight (kg) = diameter (mm)² × length (m) × 0.00623
Parameter Description:
The coefficient of 0.00623 is derived based on the density of stainless steel (7930 kg/m³).

Construction Engineering

Ocean vessels

Petrochemical
Marine & Outdoor Environmental Engineering
Component connections on ship decks and offshore platforms, as well as dock facility fastening, often utilize 316 stainless steel to resist seawater salt spray corrosion. It is also used for mounting brackets for photovoltaic power plants and wind turbines, as well as for outdoor advertising stands and railings.
Food, Healthcare, & Home
Equipment assembly and conveyor belt mounting in food production lines; fastening medical equipment frames and operating room instruments; and assembly of bathroom fixtures and outdoor furniture in homes.
Different size uses
- M3-M6: Small machinery, electronic equipment, and furniture assembly.
- M8-M12: Building construction, mechanical equipment, and automotive repair.

- #6–1/4″: Home DIY and light-duty fastening.
- 3/8″–1/2″: Construction, piping, and mechanical assembly.
- 5/8″ and above: Heavy industry, marine equipment, and oil equipment.
How to choose the right diameter?
- Light loads (e.g., hanging pictures, furniture): M4-M6 / #8–1/4″.
- Medium loads (e.g., brackets, mechanical components): M8-M12 / 3/8–1/2″.
- Heavy loads (e.g., steel structures, bridges): M16+ / 5/8″ and above.

Diameter representation
Metric Diameter Notation
The nominal diameter (major diameter) of a thread is directly indicated by the letter “M” prefix, followed by the diameter value (in mm). For example, M10 indicates a stainless steel threaded rod with a nominal diameter of 10 mm.
Inch Diameter Notation
The diameter is expressed as a fraction or decimal in inches. This is often combined with the thread thread number (TPI) to distinguish between coarse and fine threads, but the diameter itself is indicated separately. Common diameters include 3/8″ (0.375″), 1/2″ (0.5″), 5/8″ (0.625″), 3/4″ (0.75″), and 1″ (1″), etc.
Thread type
Classification by tooth pitch
- Coarse threads: (UNC in the US and BSW in the British standard) have fewer threads per inch, a shallower thread profile, a thicker root, greater shear resistance, and faster assembly. Examples include automotive chassis bolts and agricultural machinery connections.
- Fine threads: (UNF in the US and BSF in the British standard) have more threads per inch, a deeper thread profile, a larger thread contact area, and are naturally anti-loosening and have excellent fatigue resistance. They are used in precision engineering applications, such as hydraulic system fittings and optical equipment adjustment screws. The ultra-fine UNEF thread is primarily used in the North American market.

Different Heads

Classification by thread use/characteristics
- Pipe Thread: Used for pipe connections, it is divided into cylindrical pipe threads (G threads, non-sealing) and tapered pipe threads (R/Rc threads, sealing, using thread profiles to seal). Dimensions are expressed in inches (e.g., G1/2″, Rc3/4″) and are commonly found in plumbing and pneumatic piping.
- Trapezoidal Thread: With a thread angle of 30° (metric) or 29° (American ACME threads), it offers high load-bearing capacity and is suitable for power transmission. It is used in applications requiring axial force transmission, such as jacks and machine tool screws.
- Square Thread: With a rectangular thread profile, it offers high efficiency but is complex to machine. It has been gradually replaced by trapezoidal threads and is rarely used in manual machinery.
- Buttress Thread: With one vertical thread (supporting unidirectional forces) and one angled thread, it is suitable for applications with unidirectional forces, such as presses and rolling mills.
Classification by thread direction
- Right-hand thread: Tighten by turning clockwise. This is the default standard (right-hand thread is used unless otherwise specified).
- Left-hand thread: Tighten by turning counterclockwise. This is marked “LH” (e.g., M12×1.5 LH) and is used to prevent reverse loosening.
