Due to historical standards and different measurement methods, conversions between different wire gauge systems, such as BWG (Birmingham Wire Gauge), SWG (Standard Wire Gauge), and AWG (American Wire Gauge), can vary slightly. However, for #16 gauge galvanized mild steel wire:

 

1. In BWG, a gauge number 16 wire is approximately equivalent to a BWG 16, which has a diameter of about 0.065 inches or 1.65 millimeters.

2. In SWG, the equivalent gauge number might be about SWG 16, with a diameter closer to 1.63 millimeters.

    Rated Capacity / Working Load Limit

    Rated capacity is the load that a new wire rope may handle under given operating conditions and at an assumed design factor. A design factor of 5 is chosen most frequently for wire rope which equates to operating loads not exceeding 20% of the catalog Breaking Strength. Operating loads may have to be reduced when life, limb, or valuable property are at risk or other than when new rope is used. A design factor of 10 is usually chosen when wire rope is used to carry personnel which equates to operating loads not exceeding 10% of catalog Breaking Strength.

    Each 6×19 wire rope strand begins with one large center wire that is covered by a layer of nine smaller wires and then an outside layer of nine larger wires. The 6×19 wire rope has larger outer wires than 7×19 which adds to an increased abrasion resistance but also decreases its fatigue resistance. This rope can stand up against abrasion or crushing on the drum.

    When a project calls for lifting or suspending a load, cable and wire rope is often the first choice because of its cost, strength, flexibility, and versatility. Compared to a solid steel rod, steel cable is nearly as strong and has the capability to bend due to its construction of many small wires.

    1.) Cables of different types and structures have different properties. For example, aircraft cables and wire ropes made of many thin wires are more flexible, but small wires are more fragile and break easily.

    2.) Steel cables with larger wires are more abrasion resistant but are much stiffer. The wires are twisted into strands, and the strands are twisted to form the cable.

    3.) Using this method of twisting the wires and strands increases the strength, and reliability of the cable by balancing the load on all the wires.

    4.) The wear resistance is also increased because the outer wires of the strands are equally exposed to wear and will wear more evenly.

    Aircraft cable is made from 7 strands of 19 wires each. There are 6 outer strands that are preformed (bent into a helix) and one center twisted strand.

    The construction of the center strand is similar to the outer strands, so it is included in the strand count.

     

     

    7×19 and 7×7 cables are common for diameters 3/8” and smaller because of the simplicity of construction.

    Larger diameters typically use wire rope construction methods that allow much more versatility of features to match the intended application.

    The literal meaning is 6 strands of 19 steel wires twisted together, but it looks like there are 7 strands in total. The center strand is actually a smaller diameter wire rope. IWRC stands for

     

     

    “Independent Wire Rope Core”, and allows for increased flexibility, bending fatigue life, and crush resistance. ½” diameters and above typically use wire rope construction methods.

    Matching Attachment’s Working Load Limit

    The accessories that come with the wire rope must have at least the same working load limit as the wire rope.The rigging assembly can only be rated up to the weakest component minus any termination efficiencies.

    Clips, sockets, thimbles, sleeves, hooks, links, shackles, sheaves, blocks, etc. must match in size, material and strength to provide adequate safety protection. Proper installation is crucial for maximum efficiency and safety.

    How to correctly measure the diameter of wire rope

    The wire rope should be measured at the peaks of the relative strands rather than the non-relative valleys. The below figure shows the correct way to measure the cable diameter.

    Inspect Wire Rope Regularly

    Use inspection instructions as guidelines only. Two of the most important prerequisites for inspecting wire rope are technical knowledge and experience.

    Check the general condition of the wire. Also, look for localized damage and wear, especially at wire rope attachments. Inspect all parts that come in contact with the wire rope. Poor performance of wire rope can often be traced back to worn or wrong-sized sheaves, drums, rollers, etc. Look for kinks, broken wires, abrasions, lack of lubrication, rust damage, crushing, reduction of diameter, stretch, or other obvious damage. If any of these conditions exist or if there is any other apparent damage to the wire rope, retire the wire rope.

    Note: When in doubt about the extent of the damage, retire the wire rope in question immediately. Without laboratory analysis, it is impossible to determine the strength of damaged or used wire. Thus, you will not be able to tell whether wire rope with any amount of damage is safe to use. Retire the wire rope that is damaged. For specific inspection procedures check various OSHA, WRTB, ANSI, and ASTM publications.

    Cable Materials and Coating Types

    1. Hot-dipped Galvanized Cable

    In order to obtain better performance, each steel wire of the cable is immersed in molten zinc at a temperature of up to 500°C, hence the name “hot dip”. This galvanizing method produces a higher quality zinc layer and a longer service life than other methods. It’s a great choice for high-capacity, general-purpose, and even marine applications。

    However, since it is still essentially a coating, it will wear and even peel off over time. Therefore, it is necessary to check for rust or corrosion regularly during use. Any compromised hot-dipped galvanized wire rope will need to be replaced and salvaged, or in worse cases, scrapped by cutting into three- or four-foot sections before discarding.

     

    2. Types 304 and 316 Stainless Steel Cable

    Both types of 304 and 316 stainless steel (also known as marine-grade) are great corrosion resistant cable solutions. Type 304 is actually more economical than type 316. The latter is a higher grade of stainless steel because it contains molybdenum, which provides this cable type superior corrosion resistance.

    While type 316 is more expensive, it is resistant to environmental and chloride contaminants, so we recommend it for use in saltwater and high salinity environments.

    Stainless steel cables, whether type 304 or 316, will rust, so it is important to regularly rinse with fresh water and take anti-rust measures to remove any microscopic contaminant buildup.

     

    3. Vinyl Coated Cable

    Both stainless and galvanized cables have a thicker vinyl layer to protect against chemicals, chlorides, and microscopic contaminants. It’s used in high traffic areas where skin-to-cable contact is common. This layer will need to be stripped off to expose the cable inside whenever splicing is required so sleeves, ferrules, and other splicing components will have better contact with the load bearing cable. If long term exposure to heat and UV-rays is expected, be sure to check the vinyl coating regularly for dry-rot.

    The diameter of a wire rope is the diameter of the circle that encloses all the wires. When measuring wire rope, it is important to take the greatest distance of the outer limits of the ‘crowns’ of the two opposite strands. A measurement across the valleys will result in incorrect (lower) readings.

    1. Carbon Steel Wire Rod

    Carbon steel wire is a type of steel wire rod, the main components of which are iron (Fe) and carbon (C), and may contain a small amount of silicon (Si), manganese (Mn), phosphorus (P), sulfur (S) and other alloying elements.

    Different grades of carbon steel wire have different chemical compositions, for example:

    1) B-CH1T: C content ≤0.010%, Mn content ≤0.35%, P content ≤0.030%, S content ≤0.035%, and may contain a small amount of Alt, Ti and other elements.

    2. Alloy Steel Wire Rod

    Alloy steel wire rod is made of carbon steel with other alloying elements (such as chromium Cr, molybdenum Mo, nickel Ni, etc.) added to improve its mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. These steel wires of different grades have different chemical compositions, for example:

    1) ML20Cr: C content is between 0.17~0.23%, Si content ≤0.30%, Mn content is between 0.60~0.90%, P content ≤0.035%, S content ≤0.035%, Cr content is between 0.90~1.20%.

    1) SS 304/316

    Colored stainless steel rope net process

    We can realize colored stainless steel rope net through two major processes: surface coloring treatment and artistic processing, combined with chemical, physical and printing technology.

    1. Chemical coloring method

    The stainless steel rope net is soaked in a heated, concentrated chromium sulfate solution, and a transparent or colored oxide film is formed on the surface by controlling the reaction time and temperature. This method does not rely on pigments or dyes. The color comes from the oxidation reaction between the metal and the chemical solution, and has the characteristics of corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and high temperature resistance.

    2. Screen printing + etching

    The acid-resistant protective film is printed on the surface of stainless steel by screen printing, and then the unprotected area is corroded by etching agents such as ferrous chloride to form a pattern or text, and finally the color is achieved by oxidation or spray painting.

    3. Spray painting

    Spray radiation coloring material particles on the surface of the stainless steel rope net to form a texture effect similar to pear skin, and then the color is attached by high temperature curing. This method is easy to operate and suitable for rapid mass production.

    4. Electroplating coloring

    A layer of metal or alloy plating, such as chromium, nickel, copper, etc., is deposited on the surface of the stainless steel rope net by electrochemical methods, and then the color is given by oxidation or dyeing. This method can achieve different gloss effects such as mirror and matte, and improve the grade of the product.

    Installation of Stainless Steel Rope Net

    Preparation before installation

    1. Confirm the bearing capacity of the installation surface: wall, column, and ground, and check whether there are corrosive environments such as strong wind, acid rain, salt spray, or high and low temperature conditions.
    2. Tools: stainless steel clips, expansion bolts, U-shaped nails. Electric drill, wrench, level, dynamometer, safety rope. Equipped with safety helmets, gloves, and non-slip shoes.

    Installation process

    1. Fixed point selection and reinforcement: Use expansion bolts to fix on hard foundations such as concrete and brick walls
    2. Tension control: Tension control, about 5% elongation, avoid excessive stretching. Use a dynamometer to detect the tension of the rope net. In areas with large temperature differences, the tension needs to be readjusted in spring and autumn.
    3. Connection and splicing process: Use stainless steel clips to connect the rope net nodes. If multiple sections of rope nets need to be spliced, ensure that the overlapping length of the splicing is ≥20cm, and use double-row clips to fix. The edge of the rope net is treated with plastic sleeves or metal edging.

    Maintenance

    Daily maintenance: Avoid using acidic or abrasive cleaners. When a broken wire or loose buckle is found, replace the damaged part immediately to prevent local expansion. Equipped with safety warning.

    Problems you may encounter in use

    1 The rope net is loose or sagging

    A: Insufficient tension or loose fixing points. It is necessary to readjust the tension, check and tighten all fixing points.

    2 Buckle corrosion or breakage

    A: Material mismatch or environmental corrosion. Replace with 316L stainless steel buckles and strengthen the sealing treatment.

    3 Friction noise between the rope net and the fixing parts

    It may be installed too tightly, or the contact surface may be rough. Adjust the tension and install rubber gaskets on the contact surface.
