Automation track of the third phase of the terminal
In Qingdao Port Automated Terminal Phase III, big ships gather in the harbor, and many automated rail cranes keep moving around in the yard, placing containers on the container trucks. The production tasks of the whole terminal are assigned and dispatched by A-TOS (Intelligent Production Control System), the intelligent brain of the automated terminal. The first nationally produced fully autonomous automated terminal is another shining business card of Qingdao Port to cultivate new quality productivity, which not only represents the advanced level of intelligence but also the embodiment of green development. These automated rail cranes have another identity – hydrogen-electric coupled DC-powered rail cranes.

“The hydrogen rail cranes in the third phase of the automated terminal use DC power supply, removing the cables on the traditional rail cranes, reducing the weight of each unit by about 10 tons, and reducing energy consumption by about 4%.” Zhang Changjiang, secretary of Shandong Port Qingdao Port’s fully automated container terminal’s Mission Committee and supervisor of automatic guided vehicles in the Engineering and Technology Department, said.
Zhang Changjiang said that the third phase of the automated terminal is in the process of optimization, and further improvements are being made from the single machine to the system in order to improve the productivity of the terminal. The future goal is to break through the “last kilometer” of automated terminal innovation, realize the high-level automation of shore-side loading and unloading equipment, and make the terminal more and more “smart”.
