Mechanical Performance Level

This is the most commonly used strength marking system for carbon steel fasteners (bolts, nuts, washers), mainly based on the ISO 898-1 international standard.

Meaning Analysis

1. Grade 4.8:

“4” = 1/100 of nominal tensile strength (N/mm²) → 400 N/mm²;

“.8” = 10 times the yield strength ratio (yield strength/tensile strength) → 0.8 → Yield strength = 400 × 0.8 = 320 N/mm²

2. Grade 8.8:

  • Tensile strength: 800 N/mm²
  • Yield strength: 800 × 0.8 = 640 N/mm²

3. Grade 10.9:

  • Tensile strength: 1000 N/mm²
  • Yield strength: 1000 × 0.9 = 900 N/mm²

4. Grade 12.9:

  • Tensile strength: 1200 N/mm²
  • Yield strength: 1200 × 0.9 = 1080 N/mm²

Hardness Range

What does HV mean?

Hardness is an indicator of a material’s resistance to localized indentation, crucial for the deformation resistance of washers.

  • HV: Abbreviation for Vickers hardness. A method of calculating hardness by pressing a diamond indenter into the material surface and measuring the diagonal length of the indentation.

The HV value measures whether a washer will excessively deform, flatten, or embed in soft material under bolt preload. The higher the number, the harder the material.

  • HV100-150: Softer, used in general applications, low cost.
  • HV200-250: Medium hardness, general industrial grade, suitable for 8.8 grade bolts.
  • HV250-300+: High hardness, used in heavy-duty, high preload applications, suitable for 10.9/12.9 grade bolts.

 

Relationship between grade and hardness

  • 4.8 grade: Recommended gasket hardness range HV100 – HV180, low carbon steel (Q235) with galvanizing or blackening treatment recommended.
  • 8.8 grade: Recommended hardness range HV180 – HV250, medium carbon steel (35#, 45#), tempering + galvanizing.
  • 10.9 grade / 12.9 grade: Recommended hardness range HV250 – HV350+, medium carbon alloy steel (40Cr, etc.), quenching and tempering + galvanizing/Dacromet coating.

Main Types of Washers

1. Galvanized flat washer: A flat, circular ring with a hole in the center. The simplest structure, used to reduce friction, distribute pressure, and fill gaps.

2. Galvanized spring washer: A ring with a beveled cut, shaped like a spring. Prevents loosening and provides shock absorption, utilizing elastic tension to provide continuous restoring force.

3. Galvanized internal toothed washer: Features a sharp, upward-curved serration on the inner side. The serrations embed into the bolt head and the surface of the connecting parts, preventing loosening and rotation.

4. Galvanized external toothed washer: Features a sharp, downward-curved serration on the outer side. The serrations embed into the nut and the surface of the connected parts, while providing a certain spring tension, preventing loosening and rotation.

5. Galvanized tapered washer: Has a tapered (or wedge-shaped) cross-section. Used to compensate for angular deviations, providing a flat bearing surface when the bolt shaft is not perpendicular to the connected surfaces.

6. Galvanized combination washer: A flat washer and a spring washer (or toothed washer) pre-assembled into a single component. Simplified installation, combining anti-loosening and pressure-dispersing functions.

7. Galvanized self-locking washers: Locking is achieved through the frictional force generated by metal deformation or the compressive resistance of the nylon ring.

  • Double-fold type – the washer is pressed into a two-piece, fitted structure with raised sections.
  • Nylon embedded type – a nylon ring is embedded in the inner hole of the washer.

Other Corrosion-Resistant Material Washers
