Note: The larger the number, the smaller the wire, for example, 12 gauge galvanized wire is thinner than 9 gauge. In general, lower gauge or thicker wire is best used for stronger projects. While higher gauge galvanized wire is suitable for garden and pet fencing.

How to Choose the Gauges of Galvanized Wire?

It is important to choose the correct size of galvanized wire. When you are ready to choose galvanized wire you should consider both strength and usage.

1. According to the Strength

What is the strength of galvanized wire you need? Generally, the wire gauge determines its overall strength or breaking weight. For example, 12 gauge low carbon galvanized wire has a breaking weight of about 500 lbs. While a 14 gauge GI wire has a breaking weight of about 800 lbs. You should be clear on how strong your project needs to be to better choose its gauge.

2. Depending on the Application

If you are going to use galvanized wire for fencing, we have some suggestions for you. When you’re fencing large, heavy animals, you might consider using sturdy 12 gauge or stronger 9 gauge wire. And thinner 16 gauge GI wire is ideal for garden fencing. Of course, the specifics should be determined by your actual use. If you have any questions, you can consult with Wanzhi Steel. Our experienced sales managers will give you the answer.

Galvanized Wire Properties

Galvanized wire for sale has very many good qualities and characteristics. Next, Wanzhi Steel will take you to know more about it.

1. Flat and Smooth Surface

The galvanized steel wire improves the unevenness of the wire. The zinc layer is able to cover up the fine lines on the wire. This makes the surface of the wire appear flatter and smoother. It will be used for the garden fence will look particularly beautiful.

2. High Resistance to Damage

The bare steel wire can easily be scratched or otherwise damaged, which weakens the wire’s strength. But galvanized steel wire is different. The zinc layer on its surface provides a hard protective layer for the wire. The zinc layer provides a protective shield between the wire and the outside world, making it more resistant to damage than plain steel wire alone.

3. Good Toughness and Flexibility

Galvanized wire for sale is a kind of iron wire made by drawing using low carbon steel. Therefore, its toughness is excellent. Formed galvanized wire products can be bent and folded. It is also very elastic. It is very good to use this material to make springs.

4. Fire Resistant

GI steel wire is also common in industrial applications where there is a risk of fire. It is an indisputable fact that it remains strong in most fires. This is because when the wire is hot-dipped, the resulting zinc has an even higher melting point than regular zinc. The zinc layer’s resistance to melting helps prevent the steel inside the wire from reaching its own melting point.

5. Low Cost

Galvanized steel is often a more affordable option than other types of wire products, such as PVC coated wire. Galvanized wire offers price advantages along with strong, long-lasting and durable properties. This means that galvanized wire is less prone to damage, which greatly reduces the cost of repairs and replacements.

6. Long life span

The long life of galvanized steel wire is one of the reasons why many people are willing to buy it. Galvanized wire can last up to about 20 years in harsh or high humidity environments. And it can last up to 50 years or longer in normal environments.

What Is Galvanized Wire?

Galvanized steel wire is steel wire which is coated with a zinc layer, which can protect the steel wire from rust and corrosion. Zinc can be applied using a method in which the wire is dipped into a molten bath of zinc or it can be electroplated on the surface. Due to its durability and smooth finish, it is suitable for many applications.

GI Wire Manufacturing Process

The production of GI wire is simple. We use steel rods as raw materials. Then the first step is to clean or pickle the wire rods to remove the oxides and impurities on the surface. After that, the descaled wire rods will go through wire drawing machines to make wires of the required size. These wires are often referred to as “black wires”. After being pickled and annealed, the wire will be galvanized, including hot-dipped galvanizing and electro-galvanizing. Then they will be rolled up into coils. You can package them up for sale after quality control.

What Is Quality Galvanized Iron Wire?

1. Firstly, the wire surface should be smooth without sagging, dripping, slags, or other obvious defects. For example, the zinc leakage area should be less than 0.5 mm; Also, no more than 3 leakage spots per square centimeter.
2. Secondly, the zinc layer should be uniform and it should be firmly bonded to the base metal, which will not fall off or bulge through the hammer test.
3. Thirdly, the diameter tolerance should be within a reasonable range.

Can Galvanized Wire be Used Outside?

Yes. One of the most important properties of galvanized wire is its ability to resist rust. Therefore, it is well suited for outdoor use, such as the outdoor fences we commonly see. In the case of ungalvanized wire, for example, constant rain and wet weather can cause it to corrode quickly. Unlike galvanized wire, however, it can adapt to harsh weather conditions. It holds up well even in wet and salt-laden conditions.

Does Galvanized Wire Rust?

The answer is yes, but very slowly. Galvanized wire is much more corrosion resistant than black iron wire. The galvanizing process is a zinc coating applied on the surface of steel wire. It can prevent the steel wire from rusting for years because of the zinc oxide layer on the surface. However, when the zinc layer breaks down, rusting will be inevitable. But as mentioned, it is slow enough, say several decades, for your applications.

Types of Galvanized Steel Wire

According to the galvanizing process, GI wires are divided into hot-dip galvanized wire and cold galvanized wire (electro-galvanized steel wire). Below are more details for your reference.

Hot Dipped Galvanized Wire

Hot dipped steel wire is processed through a hot-dipped zinc bathing process. That is the wire is immersed in hot zinc molten so that the surface is fully covered with a zinc-coating layer. The hot-dip GI wire has excellent corrosion resistance, flexibility, and softness.

Manufacturing process: Steel rod coil — pre-treatment — wire drawing — rust removing — acid washing — thermal zinc coating — annealing — (wire re-drawing) –wire coiling — quality control — packaging.

Electro Galvanized Wire

The difference between hot-dipped and electro galvanized wire is the galvanizing process. The latter one uses the principle of electrolysis to paint a thin layer of zinc to the surface of steel wire. It makes the wire surface uniform and shiny.

Production process: Steel rod coil — pre-treatment — wire drawing ( wire redrawing) — rust removing — acid washing — cold galvanizing — wire coiling –quality control — packaging.

Galvanized Wire Price

When looking for galvanized wire for sale, it is inevitable to ask the price of GI wire. You can find the market price ranges from 400-1,500 USD. Actually, the galvanized wire price will be different with many factors, such as the diameter, the thickness of zinc-coating, galvanizing methods, suppliers, policy, etc. Commonly, thick galvanised wire and thin wire are of different prices. And the electro-galvanized wires will be cheaper than the hot-dip galvanized wires. With the cancellation of rebate tax and increasing shipping costs, the GI wire cost also rise greatly.

Wanzhi Tips
